International Day for Women's Rights

The so-called "Women's Day", or more properly "International Day for Women's Rights" is celebrated in Italy every March 8, a date chosen for the first time in 1945. In the following year, 1946, it was adopted as a symbol the mimosa, a flower chosen by Teresa Noce, Teresa Mattei and Rita Montagnana because it is elegant, but poor and available everywhere. A flower that represents the energy of women.

Can you imagine a women's day…

We want to go beyond the history and legends that can be read almost everywhere. We'd like to celebrate women through some Italian, Florentine, and contemporary examples: our opportunity for reflection this year comes from their phrases and their successes. Here's our three Florentine womens for this year.

Teresa Fornaro, INAF astrophysicist, the only Italian among the thirteen scientists chosen to lead the three research groups that analyze the data from the Mars 2020 mission.

My motherhood did not affect the selection process, the studies and skills I had acquired did count. In a word: merit. We should go back to believing that any dream can be achieved on a merit basis and bet much more on ourselves."

Chiara Francini, actress and TV presenter and writer. Awarded in Venice, in Florence, awarded the Capri Prize, Hollywood as actress of the year, Best Actress at the Rome International Film Festival and much more.

“It's like being trained from an early age to have to score 25 to get 12 and this implies attention, study, abnegation. It gives you the opportunity to be even more incisive in your goals and passions. Every day for a woman is a battle, and a woman knows how to win without weapons."

Paola Romagnani, professor of Nephrology at the University of Florence and head of the Complex Operative Unit of Nephrology and Dialysis of the Meyer University Hospital, and above all the most awarded researcher in Europe.

“We are used to associating the concept of authority with men, it is a cultural problem. (…) There is a historical reason, but there are also biases that are intrinsic in our brain. (…) There are many competent women in Italy, many are also extremely well known internationally for their skills. It would only be an enrichment for Italian society if it made the most of the enormous skills that are in the hands of women."
