The first terrarium in history was made by N B Ward, who in 1829 noticed the spontaneous growth of a fern and a shoot from a moth chrysalis, sealed with soil under glass. He replicated his discovery by making 'Ward's Case', which in time became the best way of transporting overseas flora species which until then they had never survived the journey.
Inside the terrarium, the plants emit water vapor, which condenses on the glass and falls to the ground, then returns to the soil, recreating the earth cycle in miniature. The leaves themselves, as they fall, contribute to the virtuous system by fertilizing the soil.
